Veterans Day began as “Armistice Day” to mark those who served in World War I. The day, however, soon came to embrace the sacrifice of American soldiers throughout our history. And it is significant that the tomb of the first “Unknown Soldier” is located at the Arlington National Cemetery, which began as a final resting place for men killed in the Civil War.
