In 2021, the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation dedicated a memorial honoring the Maine men who fought at the 3rd Battle of Winchester. Military control of Winchester changed 16 times in 28 months during the Civil War. The Union victory there in September 1864 resolved control of the entire Shenandoah Valley for the North and led directly to the end of the war in April 1865.
